The Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées (OMP) is organizing the first edition of the Ocean Satellite MOnitoring SummEr school.
This one-week summer school will provide PhD students and early career researchers an overview of the fundamentals of ocean data acquisition through space-based remote sensing, as well as of a range of related ocean applications. Key ocean variables will be covered, ranging from sea surface topography and surface ocean currents (Low Resolution Mode, SAR and wide swath altimetry), sea surface salinity (microwave radiometer), sea surface temperature (IR radiometer), ocean colour and shoreline (optical sensor). In order to make the school as concrete as possible, a substantial amount of the courses will be devoted to practical work with thematic approaches and based on case studies. The main objective is to provide an expertise on processing and analysis of ocean observations from space-based remote sensing.
Some lectures will also be dedicated to technical aspects such as exploring relevant databases and discover satellite products. The ODATIS Ocean Cluster (Ocean Data Information and Services), the European Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) and OceanDataLab research laboratory will present services for accessing and exploiting product catalogues.
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own research topics and to engage directly with well known experts in various fields of ocean remote sensing.
Students will receive a certificate of attendance. There is no fee for the summer school but application is mandatory.
APPLICATION
The summer school will take place from June 29th to July 3rd, 2026. Applicants are invited to register and then submit a short motivation letter and a CV. The application deadline is 27 February 2026. Selected applicants will be informed in mid-March 2026.
